Our last three guns, the Walther P22 , the Ruger SR22 and the Bersa Thunder 22, are chambered in 22lr. Many people will tell you the 22lr is not suitable for self defense. Remember the rule -“Choose the largest caliber firearm you can shoot acurately and always carry” If that is a 22lr then get it, pratice and carry all the time. Also as your children grow they will need to be properly trained in the use of firearms and 22s are a great place to start. We use them in our Ladies’ CCW classes.
“Many folks frown at the thought of using a 22 rimfire for defensive purposes, and there are many more powerful choices, but the first rule of a gunfight is to have a gun. Many people, for whatever reason, cannot handle recoil, whether it be from an injury or arthritis, many of the people who are most likely to be victimized are least able to fire a powerful weapon. For them, the 22 Long Rifle in a pistol that is easy to fire is a good choice. Properly loaded, the twenty-two can do a decent job.”
The Walther P22 and the Bersa Thunder 22 are very similar to their big brother 380s we have already talked about. Jeff’s comments on the Ruger SR22 apply to these two as well.
“Shooting the SR22 Pistol is a real pleasure… The magazines are very easy to load, the pistol feels good in the hand, and recoil is very light, as it is with most any 22 Long Rifle pistol. “
One note that is true for any defensive handgun is the importance of making sure your defensive round of choice functions flawlessly in your gun. This is particularly true with 22lr.
